There’s always something about travelling that makes me want to abandon all of my healthy routines. The ” I am on vacation” mindset that I grew up with, the eating out routine combined with the amount of food temptations always get me. But coming back from a vacation feeling like I need another vacation is no fun. So I decided to make an effort, get out of my comfort zone, change my mindset and start travelling healthy. I found a few things that really worked for me that I’d like to share them with you.
1.Most important tip – travel without make up.
Lately I’ve been informing myself a lot from all kinds of sources on how to take care of my skin while traveling. My favorite Instagram Skincare Gurus – Celeste Thomas ( The True Spoon), Dr. Mona Vand and my sister Dr. Alis Salame who is a Dermatologist Doctor have helped me understand better why it’s good to avoid using make-up while travelling.
The airplane cabin air is extremely dry and sucks the hydrating water content right out of your skin. Meaning your skin can get extremely dry while travelling which is why the number one thing you want to focus on is HYDRATION – internal and external.
Having makeup on your face during a long flight with toxins in the air will clog pores and potentially cause breakouts. My suggestion is to keep your skin clean and hydrated.
-clean your skin with a wipe – click for what I use
-use a hydrating mask – any hydrating mask
-moisturize – click for what I use
2.Drink water! Lots of it!
Bring a bottle of water with you on the plane. The most annoying thing for me to do is to annoy someone else, in this case the flight attendant. And asking for a glass of water every 45 minutes is annoying. So I always remember to get myself a big bottle of water. Sometimes even two, depending on how long is the flight.
3.Prepack airplane snacks
It’s almost impossible to find a healthy snack in the airport and the last thing you need before a flight is a ton of sugar and/or salt in your body. So I like to pack a bag of pistachio or raw almonds or a piece of fruit.
4. Slice of pizza? Have a salad with it!
I know, I get it! All you want to do when you’ve finally landed and are in a new place is to experience their culture and food. If you’re in France you want to devour the nearest croissant, or if you’re in Italy you want the biggest slice of pizza you can find. The excitement is real and I totally get that. What I like to do while on vacation is to avoid feeling like I have to hold myself from ordering their best known dish. I am on vacation! I want to experience everything the country has to offer. So I always make sure I order some sort of veggies, either a salad for appetizer or grilled vegetables as a side dish. This way I know I’ve satisfied all my culinary wants but also all my nutritious needs.
This is my biggest challenge. The only time I don’t consume alcohol on vacation is when I travel with my parents and siblings. My mother doesn’t drink, she was never a drinker and neither my father. We grew up learning how to have fun on vacations without any alcohol which is something I appreciate so much now in my adulthood. I always like to say ” You need to stop drinking alcohol when you’ve reached a point in your life where you can’t laugh and have fun anymore without it!”.
While it’s such an easy thing to do when I am with them on vacation it’s so difficult to do when I am with my friends on vacation. Yes, environment can influence me greatly. It’s so much easier to say yes to something when everyone around you is doing it. And I do like to have a drink from time to time! Especially a glass of white wine or prosecco. But when I do I always drink plenty of water with it to counteract the effects of dehydration. I stay away from sugary drinks ( another reason to gain some weight while on vacation) so my go to drinks are like I said white wine, prosecco, and tequila with crushed jalapeno and sparkling water with a splash of lime.
At the end of the day, vacation means wanting to let loose and be carefree. Since I’m not someone who believes in food restriction, I just try to practice as many healthy lifestyle habits as I can while traveling, so hopefully these tips that have worked for me will work for you, too!
