Is ORGANIC food better for you?

Going to the supermarket nowadays can be really tricky. We don’t know what to buy anymore, what products are good or bad for us. And even if we know, or we hear that ORGANIC food is better we still have second thoughts about it. Why? Because first of all it’s more expensive and second of all we really don’t know what it means and how it’s affecting our bodies. But are we talking about money or about ignorance? What if I would tell you that buying organic food may actually help you save some money in the long run? Would you buy it then?

I am guessing lots of people would answer YES to this question which means they don’t buy organic food because it’s expensive. And lots of people would answer NO which means they think this is just a big lie and it really doesn’t matter. And then there is the other group of people that they don’t really know what is this all about. So let’s start with one simple question

What does ORGANIC food mean?

    ORGANIC FOOD is the product of a farming system which avoids the use of man-made fertilisers, pesticides; growth regulators and livestock feed additives. Irradiation and the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or products produced from or by GMOs are generally prohibited by legislation. In other words organic food it’s grown naturally. Farmers develop fertile soil by rotating crops, using compost, manure and clover in order, instead of applying artificial fertilizers.

Why is ORGANIC food better ?

In order for a plant to grow it needs four important components : sunlight, air, water and nutrients. The soil in which the plant grows should provide all nutrients that are necessary for its growth, for example magnesium and zinc. If the soil is depleted from these minerals, the plant can’t absorb them which means we will consume a plant that has little to no minerals.

Minerals that are particularly affected by these intensive farming methods are iron, zinc, copper, magnesium and selenium. A study in the Journal of Applied Nutrition that took place in Chicago demonstrates how ORGANIC products have more nutrients than CONVENTIONAL ones.

” Over a period of two years, foods were purchased at several stores in the western suburbs of Chicago. Apples, pears, potatoes, and corn were selected, choosing specimens of similar variety and size. Organic whole-wheat flour and wheat berries were obtained from catalogs and markets in the Chicago area. Baby foods and “Junior” foods were also included in the study.


The organic pears, apples, potatoes and wheat had, on an average, over 90% more of the nutritional elements than similar commercial food.”

POTATOES – 110% more CALCIUM

WHEAT – 430% more MAGNESIUM

SWEET CORN – 160% more IRON

AVERAGE ORGANIC vs CONVENTIONAL

– 60% more ZINC; – 78% more CHROMIUM; – 91% more PHOSPHORUS; – 118% more MAGNESIUM; – 73% more IRON; – 63% more CALCIUM; – 178% more MOLYBDENUM.

” Recent studies have confirmed this finding and interestingly, according to population studies, many people in the western world are becoming increasingly deficient in these minerals, leading to problems such as ANEMIA, FATIGUE, SUBFERTILITY and POOR IMMUNITY.


Studies show that many food additives common in processed foods are also banned from organic products such as monosodium glutamate ( MSG), aspartame, tartrazine because they are linked to health issues and behavioral problems in children. ” – ( Healing Foods- Susan Curtis, Pat Thomas, Dragon Vilinac ).

As you can see the problem is getting bigger and bigger as FOOD impacts our health slowly with subtle changes. Changes that one cannot see or feel overnight, rather they influence our health during long periods of time, which can be a reason for one to not count FOOD as a reason for his health problems.

What is the IMMUNE SYSTEM and how can ORGANIC FOOD strengthen it?

The immune system is made up of a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body. One of the important cells involved are white blood cells, also called leukocytes, which come in two basic types that combine to seek out and destroy disease-causing organisms or substances. In other words the IMMUNE SYSTEM is the ARMY of your body, with leukocytes being “the soldiers”.  Whenever there is a threat or a ” stranger” in your body, the IMMUNE SYSTEM will protect you from it.

But when your immune system is weak it cannot protect your body as much as it should which makes you susceptible to several conditions caused by bacterial, parasitic, fungal and viral infections. Healthy immune system warriors need good, regular nourishment. Consuming foods that contain plenty of nutrients strengthens our immune system which protects us and makes us healthier.

Zinc – keeps the immune system strong, helps heal wounds, and supports normal growth;

Iron – is an important component of hemoglobin, the substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to transport it throughout your body

Selenium – has the ability to fight inflammation, increase blood flow, reduce free radical oxidative stress and help with antioxidant activity

Copper – It helps your body make red blood cells and keeps nerve cells and your immune system healthy. It also helps form collagen, a key part of bones and connective tissue. Copper may also act as an antioxidant, reducing free radicals that can damage cells and DNA. Copper helps the body absorb iron.

Deficiencies in Zinc, Iron, Selenium, Cooper, Vitamin A, C, E weakens your immune system.

” Is money the real problem? “

I hear this often. ” You spend this much on food? Why? Just because it’s organic? Organic it’s just a big lie. And even if it’s not, I can’t do that. I am saving money to buy a car/house/go on a vacation.”

I totally agree with people who think like that. I love vacations too! And clothes, and shoes and a new car but when did we start to invest more in our things rather than us? That’s what strikes me!

Nowadays people are willing to cut their spendings on what they put into their bodies just to buy a new car.

Who cares if I had flu 2-3 times this year or I keep having headaches or I feel tired most of the days if I drive a new car?

I think the problem here is that we didn’t get a proper education when it comes to food. And I totally understand that! Our parents and grandparents never worried about this, they used to live in different times. Times where ” organic” was the only choice. But wake up! We are not in those times anymore. Wake up and adapt to our times!

It’s not about money! It’s all about PRIORITIES!

Ask yourself what are your priorities? What’s your first priority in life? You or your car? You or a bigger house? You or a pair of shoes?

After doing my own research I found that an American spends on average between 1000-1600$ on prescription drugs. And 70% of Americans spend under 250$ on over-the-counter medications. Eating healthier will save you money in the long run because you will spend less money on medications.

Also let’s not make a big mistake here and think that ORGANIC = HEALTHY.

ORGANIC doesn’t mean HEALTHY

So be aware of these traps you might fall into as we live in a world where no one cares about you. As I speak now there are people fighting for this to stop and have been fighting for some time but somehow big companies always find a way to make more money by lying to us. Because as I said no one cares about you or your health, they all care about money, more and more and more. And what an easy way to make that happen by feeding people ” organic Oreos” or ” Organic Macaroni & Cheese” that will eventually make you sick which will make you spend more money on medications.
